Grapple Mania utilises the ‘ADHD’ Ruleset

ADHD TLDR VERSION

  • 8 minute matches

  • Modified ‘ADCC’ pro style ruleset

  • No NEGATIVES in first 4 minutes (first half of match) in all Grapple Mania matches including FINALS.

  • Takedowns won't be stopped if in motion and move into the crowd. Once motion stops and it's safe, the referee will reset the action.

  • Takedowns may be stopped only if there's a risk of falling out of the competition area.

  • Submission attempts moving into the crowd won't be stopped unless motion ceases. Reset in the same position only if safe (e.g., not a fully locked heel hook).

  • Submissions that roll off the mats will only be reset in the same position if safe.

  • The Pit is there to add play to a position, not to add score. For more information watch the following.

  • If the event is held at a non-pit venue - no using vertical walls to complete takedowns (e.g., wall/cage wrestling). Takedowns in motion to a vertical wall are fine, but pinning against the vertical wall to secure a takedown is not.

  • Matches can be won via submission, points, or referee’s decision.*

  • *In finals or money on the mat brackets, EBI style overtime will be used if a winner is not determined via submission or points.

Permitted Techniques*

  • Chokes (excluding using hands to close the windpipe)

  • Arm bars, shoulder locks, and wrist locks

  • Leglocks, including ankle locks, kneebars, heel hooks, toe holds and rotational leglocks

  • Calf slicer

  • Bicep slicer

  • Reap

  • Twister

  • Compression submissions

  • Smothers (palm or chest over nose and mouth)

*Juveniles and blue/white belts may compete using IBJJF blue belt permissible techniques if desired and agreed by both athletes

Prohibited Techniques

  • Kani Basami (flying scissors takedown)

  • Jumping closed guard

  • Slamming, unless locked in a submission (must release slam if submission is let go)

  • Neck cranks that trap both shoulders with downward pressure

  • Full Nelson

  • Spiking opponent's head during takedown or while on your back

  • Rolling forward with someone on your back

  • Any form of striking

  • Eye gouging or fish hooking

  • Grabbing ears or hair pulling

  • Holding fewer than 4 fingers or fewer than 5 toes

  • Thumbing, ‘oil checking’,  scratching, or pinching

  • Biting

  • Squeezing or putting pressure on the groin area

  • Knees or elbows on face

  • Slippery substances on body or clothing

  • Holding clothing

  • Use of or wearing any item that potentially endangers the health and/or safety of any athlete or potentially interferes with the match or opponent’s performance (i.e hard protective gear, jewellery, adornments)

Scoring (Positive Points)

  • Positions must be held for 3 seconds and be free from submission threats to earn points.

    • Guard pass = 3 points (75% of opponent’s back on the mat, controlled position)

    • Knee on belly = 2 points (knee must be on the stomach, opponent cannot be on their side)

    • Mount = 2 points (both knees on the floor, opponent’s back on the floor)

    • Back mount with hooks = 3 points (both hooks or body triangle, control for 3 seconds)

    • Takedown ending in guard/half guard = 2 points (control for 3 seconds, no submission threat)

    • Clean takedown ending past guard = 4 points (control for 3 seconds, no submission threat)

    • Sweep ending in guard/half guard = 2 points (control for 3 seconds, no submission threat)

    • Clean sweep ending past guard = 4 points (control for 3 seconds, no submission threat)

Reversals

  • Reversals from bottom to top will be scored as sweeps: 2 points if ending in guard, 4 points if ending in side control.

  • Continuous motion required for points.

  • Points awarded only if sweep is initiated by the athlete.

Other Scoring Rules

  • Points for a position change will only be awarded for the final position held for 3 seconds.

  • Guard passing directly to mount or knee on the stomach scores points only for the guard pass.

Penalties (Negative Points)

  • Negatives will only apply in the LAST half of any match.

  • Negative point for voluntarily pulling guard or transitioning to a non-standing position for 3 seconds.

  • Negative point for disengaging or avoiding engagement.

  • Passive/stalling athletes receive two warnings, then a negative point. An athlete is considered to be stalling after 10 consecutive seconds of inactivity or non-combativeness. Continued passivity results in immediate negative points.

  • Negative point for deliberately fleeing the mat or escaping submissions by fleeing.

  • Negative point for intentional use of the wall to influence the match outcome.

  • Negative point for bad language or unsporting behaviour from the athlete or coach.

  • Immediate disqualification for intentional illegal techniques or striking.

Additional Rules

  • No sweeping points awarded if a submission attempt initiated the position change (i.e the guard player attacks an omoplata which results in them coming on top)

  • No takedown points if the opponent holds turtle position for 3 seconds.

  • Negative point for pulling guard within 3 seconds of a takedown attempt or going to turtle to break an attack.

  • 2 minutes recovery time for unintentional eye pokes or groin strikes; fight forfeited if unable to continue.

  • Athletes may submit by tapping at least TWICE on their opponent’s body or on the ground or by verbally submitting. If an athlete shouts or screams during the match it is considered a verbal tap. An athlete rendered unconscious or an injured athlete who cannot continue to compete is considered to have submitted, and forfeits the match.

  • The match ends via submission when an athlete submits in one of the manners above and the referee stops the match. Athletes MUST release submissions immediately if directed to stop by the referee.
